During Your Visit

At the Singapore Neurology & Sleep Centre, you will be seen by a Neurologist who specialises in evaluating and treating Neurological & Sleep disorders. The specialist will review your general medical history and take a detailed sleep history. After consultation, if necessary, you may be scheduled for various tests.

Patients with nerve and muscle disorders may undergo a Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) with Electromyography (EMG) which is an electrical test of nerve and muscle function. Patients with a seizure disorder may require an electroencephalogram (EEG) which is another electrical test which records brain wave activity and helps to assess if abnormal brain discharges are present.

Patients with sleep disorders may be scheduled to be admitted in the afternoon to spend a night sleeping in the Sleep Laboratory, so that your sleep can be observed and recorded by the sleep technologist. You will be discharged in time for work the next morning. This nighttime study, known as a Polysomnogram, may be followed by a daytime nap study known as the Multiple Sleep Latency Test.

Upon completion of your tests, your doctor will discuss with you the test results and recommended treatment.

1.Nerve Conduction Study & Electromyography (EMG)

2.Electroencephalography (EEG)

3.Polysomnogram (Sleep Study)
A full polysomnogram measures the following body functions during sleep:

  • Nasal airflow
  • Respiratory effort
  • Blood oxygen level
  • Snoring
  • Heart rate and rhythm (ECG)
  • Electrical activity in the brain (EEG)
  • Eye and muscle movement

4.Continuous Positive Pressure Titration Study
This is an investigation where the pressure administered through a nasal mask is titrated during the study. An optimal pressure that splints open the upper airway is then determined.

5.Video Monitoring
This is performed to record nocturnal seizures and abnormal behaviour, or movements during sleep.

6.Multiple Sleep Latency Test
This is a day test conducted to assess sleepiness in the day. It records the brain waves, heart rate, muscle activity and eye movements.
