Neurology & Sleep Research

Current Research

Neurology & Sleep Research: Dr Lim Li Ling has research interests in Neurology & Sleep Medicine, which include Sleep Disorders in the Singapore population, Restless Legs Syndrome, Sleep & Headaches, Sleep Disorders in Parkinson’s Disease, and Neuromuscular Diseases in Sleep Disorders.
She has received numerous research grants for her research in Sleep Medicine and Neurology (in Headaches and Epilepsy), from the National Sleep Foundation in the United States, the American Headache Society, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Research Programs Council and the National Medical Research Council (NMRC) in Singapore. Her research work in Restless Legs Syndrome, Headaches and Epilepsy has won top Neuroscience Research awards in consecutive years at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. She is the Principal Investigator of the first NMRC funded clinical research study looking at Sleep Patterns in Parkinson’s Disease and Normal Controls in Singapore. Currently she is studying sleep disorders in Singaporeans and sleep habits of adolescents in Singapore.

Biography

Dr. Lim completed her Neurology Residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation (CCF) in June 2001 after medical school and achieving the Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine at the National University of Singapore. After fellowship in Electromyography, Neuromuscular Diseases and Sleep Medicine at the CCF, she remained on staff in the Section of Sleep Disorders for one year. She returned home to Singapore in 2004, and is currently a Consultant Neurologist in Singapore. She practices Sleep Medicine at the Sleep Disorders Unit of the Singapore General Hospital, and is also actively involved in teaching activities of the Sleep Laboratory and the Singapore Sleep Society.
During her fellowship training years at the CCF (2002-2004), Dr. Lim studied large and small nerve fiber function in patients with Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) using laboratory electrophysiologic techniques including electromyography and studies of autonomic and small fiber nerve function. An association between RLS and peripheral neuropathy has long been recognized but not well characterized. Further work in this area will lead to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of RLS, one of the most common and frequently overlooked sleep disorders. Besides neuromuscular disorders, Dr Lim's research interests also extend into the field of Headaches and their relation to Sleep, for which she has received research funding from the American Headache Society.

Testimonial

The Pickwick Fellowship allowed me to complete my research study over 2 years while completing Neurophysiology training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. The generous sponsorship made all the results achieved in those 2 productive years possible. The support of the National Sleep Foundation has given me a solid start to my academic career in Sleep Medicine for which I will always be grateful.
Hopes for the future of your career and sleep research in general: Now that I have returned to Singapore my home country after 7 years training in Neurology, Neurophysiology, Neuromuscular Diseases and Sleep in the United States, I would like to do my part in raising levels of awareness of Sleep Disorders in Singapore. I hope we can emulate the success of the National Sleep Foundation, perhaps through the combined efforts of local healthcare professionals interested in Sleep and the Singapore Sleep Society, in promoting Sleep education and research in this country. I plan to remain actively involved in clinical practice and research in the field of Sleep Medicine. I would like to promote Sleep education for the public, and also introduce formal and organized teaching of Sleep Medicine into our undergraduate and graduate medical school curriculum. We need to attract more healthcare professionals to this exciting field to improve standards of management of sleep disorders and quality of research. Sleep related research data, including large population surveys on sleep related habits and symptoms, are generally lacking in Asian populations like Singapore. I believe this is an important starting point for clinical research, identifying the nature and scope of existing sleep health problems. This is one area I plan to focus my research efforts on in the near future.
